Description: The Blue Ridge Crossing Development is a 60 acre redevelopment project located in eastern Kansas City, Missouri at the intersection or Interstate 70 and Highway 40. The site is currently occupied by Blue Ridge Mall, which will be demolished to enable this two phase development. A large national retailer will be located on the eastern 20 acres of the development and an additional 170,000 square feet of retail/restaurant space to the west of this tenant will be developed as part of Phase I. Phase II, located on the west side of Sterling Avenue, will include about 120,000 square feet of retail/restaurant and a renovated three story office building.
Piper-Wind Architects, Inc. was responsible for the master plan and site design for this redevelopment project. We worked closely with the City of Kansas City, Missouri planning staff and neighboring property owners to develop a plan that incorporates New Urbanism concepts - such as reinforcing and enhancing the pedestrian experience though the use of side walks, landscaping, and pedestrian scaled light fixtures. The mass of the buildings was modulated to create a more architecturally rich facade.
Piper-Wind Architects, Inc. developed Design Standards that establish a "sense of place" for the development though guidelines that create continuity in the design of the site, signage, and buildings.
